Actually, more than a minute.  I want a few minutes.  A few minutes of your time, sirs and madams.

You’re only four ingredients away from a delicious, homemade whipped frosting recipe. Better Than the Bakery Whipped Frosting is such an easy creation, you’ll never want to get cakes from the bakery again. This frosting isn’t whipped cream – it’s whipped frosting (which is even better). It’s a fluffier version of the traditional buttercream, so it’s a perfect lighter complement to rich chocolate cake. Use this homemade frosting recipe for birthday cakes or simply as an excuse to make something sweet.

I am not a huge fan of bakery whipped frosting.  I’ve been to SO many parties where people buy a cake from the grocery store with “whipped” frosting.  And while I am not so discriminating when it comes to sweets (I love Pop Tarts and Twinkies are my love language), I have a serious bone to pick when it comes to grocery store bakery frosting.

Grocery store bakery frosting is greasy.  Which tells me that it’s most certainly loaded with shortening.

I know, haters gonna hate, but I’m really not a shortening hater.  But people — BIRTHDAYS DESERVE REAL BUTTER.


  • 1/2 cup Softened Butter
  • 1 cup Vegetable Shortening, Crisco used here
  • 2 pounds Confectioners Sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Pure Vanilla Extract
  • pinch Salt
  • 4-6 tablespoons Water, or milk


  1. In the bowl of a standing mixer or in a large bowl with an electric hand mixer, blend the butter and shortening on low speed.
  2. Gradually add about half of the confectioner’s sugar. Keep the mixer on low when adding additional ingredients, but you may increase the speed to medium when blending.
  3. Blend in the vanilla, salt and four tablespoons of the milk or water.
  4. Gradually add the rest of the confectioner’s sugar and mix very well until the frosting is smooth. If necessary, add additional milk or water to desired consistency.
